Amana Refrigerator Problems

Many of the most common Amana refrigerator problems occur in less than one year of use. They simply stop working or develop water leaks, power loss and cooling issues. Many consumers are unhappy with how quickly their refrigerator stops working properly.

They are also unhappy with how long they must wait for new parts. This leaves them without a refrigerator for close to a month at a time. Many of the technicians must come out two or three times before they are able to actually fix the unit. Refrigerator repairs can be both a costly and time-consuming ordeal.

The Amana refrigerator problems that are most reported are cooling issues. The fan or compressor will shut off before cooling the unit. This leads to food defrosting and becoming spoiled. It may also cause the temperature in the freezer to drop below freezing temperatures.

This accumulates ice around the vents and air circulation is impaired. Adjusting the thermostat usually doesn’t help and most often does not activate the cooling fans in the refrigerator. The thermostat fluctuates the temperature without being manually moved.

Other common Amana refrigerator problems include leaks. The refrigerator leaks inside of the unit where it pools water on the floor of the refrigerator. The leaking may eventually spill over onto the kitchen floor causing damage to hardwood floors.

Leaks are usually an indication of a problem with the defrost drain system. Defrosting heaters melt frost within the freezer, which is normal. It then needs to enter the draining system. However, when there is a problem with the draining system it leaks into the inside or outside of the refrigerator unit.

The refrigerators generator may stop working, which causes the entire unit to shut down. When this happens a repairman may be required to come and take a look. If parts are required they may need to be ordered, which can take more than three weeks to arrive.

Consumers will need to look for alternate refrigeration in the mean time. A growing list of complaints includes the Amana refrigerator not working at all in a short period of time. Leaving many customers looking for new refrigeration options or temporary storage for their food.

  1. I have an amana refridgerator French door top and drawer freezer on the bottom. Freezer is working fine but the fridge isn’t cooling at all. Coils have been vacuumed and the front area. Does anyone know what’s wrong?

  2. I have probably the same Amana refridgerator with the same problem. It’s model AFF2534FEW. I notice the vents in the back panel of the freezer section are obscured with ice that has formed over the coils behind them. My thought was there was not air flow through the vents to the upper part of the fridge because of the ice blockage. I removed the ice by squirting warm water against the vents until the were completely clean from ice and you could see the coil fins. I also took a hair dryer and attempted to dry out the area but not sure this makes much difference. Note-the water drains into a tray under the fridge which is accesable by taking the back cover panel off-it’s directly below the fan unit. Otherwise you cannot see this tray. I restarted the fridge after a thorough cleaning and let is sit overnight. It resumed ice making and the freezer back panel over the coil formed frost again. I also noticed the vents were pretty well frozen over again within 24 hours, so not sure if this is normal or not. The upper part of the fridge is on max cold, and it has chilled but not to the level you would expect at that setting. Normally something would freeze but not now. It’s kinda working but I’m very suspicious of it failing again soon. Is it a weak fan, thermostat, or what? This fridge is just about two years old-I’m very disappointed with the performance so far. Not worth the money I paid with such poor durability-the door seals are already starting to fall apart as well-cracks and material chunks falling out along the bottom corners. The main seal is still intact, but very soft with short age. Durometer sucks on this design Amana.

  3. I have had the same refrigerator for 3 1/2 years and IT SUCKS! The coils started freezing up just before the holidays and that causes the refrigerator portion to stop cooling. I can’t tell you how much food I’ve lost. I take the hair dryer and defrost the coils and back panel – it takes about a 1/2 hour and then it seems to work for about 24 hours and then it’s back to the hair dryer. I bought the sucker for about $1,300 at Sears and tomorrow I’m calling Sears and, hopefully, will get some satisfaction, repair, replacement, etc. I’m not about to give up until I get some answers. I paid way too much for this piece of crap. Whatever happened to refrigerators that lasted 20 years? I thought Sears sold quality products – guess I was wrong.
